COMA Gallery Welcomes Young-jun Tak to Its Roster of Artists

The Berlin-based South Korean artist brings his multidisciplinary approach and critical perspective to the Sydney gallery, challenging societal norms through diverse media.

COMA is proud to announce the representation of Young-jun Tak, an emerging artist making waves in the international art scene. Born in 1989 in Seoul, South Korea, and currently based in Berlin, Tak has garnered attention for his innovative and thought-provoking work across various mediums.

Tak’s artistic practice is characterized by a unique approach that blends different media, techniques, and subject matter. He employs obfuscation as a critical tool, challenging viewers to reconsider established norms and conventions. His sculptures, installations, and films often feature human bodies in contexts that highlight polarizing social standards, inviting audiences to question deeply ingrained societal constructs.

A key aspect of Tak’s work involves the deconstruction of coded aesthetics found in religious icons, propaganda tools, protest materials, and gender symbols. By dissolving these “fossilized” visual languages, Tak exposes the underlying polarizations and exclusions that shape our perception of the world.

Following his successful debut solo presentation with COMA in March 2024, Tak’s work is set to reach even wider audiences through upcoming exhibitions at prestigious venues. His pieces will be featured at the St. Moritz Art Film Festival, showcasing his prowess in the moving image. Additionally, Tak’s work will be included in the Bangkok Art Biennale, a testament to his growing international recognition. Closer to his roots, the SongEun Art and Cultural Foundation in Seoul will also exhibit Tak’s work, bringing his global perspective back to a Korean context.

COMA’s representation of Young-jun Tak marks an exciting development for both the gallery and the artist. It promises to bring Tak’s challenging and innovative work to new audiences in Australia and beyond, while further enhancing COMA’s reputation for showcasing cutting-edge contemporary art.

As Tak continues to push boundaries and question societal norms through his art, his addition to COMA’s roster signals the gallery’s commitment to presenting diverse, thought-provoking work that resonates with contemporary issues and aesthetics.
