A.J. Taylor, Murdering Creek, 2020. Oil on board, 160 x 122cm.
Martin Browne Contemporary presents Ground Works, an exhibition of new paintings by A.J. Taylor. From a distance Taylor’s paintings appear to depict the landscape with an almost photographic realism. Yet on closer examination, the rocky cliffs and serene waters fracture into abstract shapes and marks, while the surrounding vegetation disintegrates into flat abstract mark-making and areas of saturated colour. In the time-consuming and painstaking technique Taylor has developed, layer upon layer of paint has been applied and then rubbed back – creating an almost polished surface whilst building an illusion of depth and light into the two dimensional field.
The gallery is open and practicing COVID-19 social distancing measures. The exhibition can also be viewed online. View the exhibition here.
