A horse wins another race. Hobart welcomes an international visitor. A multinational avoids paying tax, again. The average rental cost increases. Traffic idles, wage growth also. An immigrant prepares a meal, kisses their children. Staff turn up to the slaughterhouse, the supermarkets, the banks. You enter the draw to win a television. Airlines offer cheap return deals. Holiday packages. Insurance. You acquire a home deposit, a first home owners grant. Champagne pops, cascades. Another race is run. The streets are quiet.
Alex Davern’s practice is used to confront various aspects of Australian culture, including major economic sectors such as the oil, housing, and food industries and their ability to shape our society.
Exhibition opens: 5:30–7:30pm Friday 23 August 2019
