Alexander McKenzie, The catalyst, 2019. Oil on linen, 102 x 102cm. Courtesy: the artist and Martin Browne Contemporary, Sydney.
In his highly anticipated new exhibition Niwa, Alexander McKenzie continues his exploration of implied narrative and complex symbolism within the beauty of both the European landscape and the Japanese garden. The paintings are vast, layered and complex.
McKenzie treats the landscape in his signature style but with new colour, rich dark tones, highly rendered detail and a shimmering surface. These beautiful paintings capture the gardens’ reflective lakes, ornate trees and subtle skies, all swept up in the artist’s unique dramatic vision.
Exhibition opens: 6–8pm Thursday 14 November 2019
