“The works in Bugai Whyoulter: Desert Spirit are like a map, and when I stand in front of them, it’s like I’m right there in Kunawarritji, I can feel the spirit of that place. They hold the memory of Bugai’s homeland, her Country. Created over more than 15 years, the same stories flow from the older works through to the new, reflecting a lifetime of being with, and of the land. Layers and layers of calming colours reflect seasonal shifts in the landscape, its vitality, and as viewers we are offered the privilege of seeing Country through Bugai’s eyes.
Every time I view Bugai’s work, I am captivated by its beauty and strength. I can feel the echoes and whispers of Country within her paintings. Although I have never been to Kunawarritji, her work allows me to feel it’s spirit and connection, and to experience the Country as only Bugai knows it.”
