Carlene Thompson, Kayala Ngura, 2020. Stoneware, 38 x 17 x 23cm. Courtesy: the artist, Ernabella Arts, SA and Alcaston Gallery, Melbourne.
Alcaston Gallery presents new ceramics and paintings by Carlene Thompson in her third solo exhibition with the gallery, Kanpi Country.
Kanpi Country alludes to Thompson’s Father’s Country in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunyjatjara (APY) Lands in far north South Australia with her vivid depictions of the Kalaya, or emu, a powerful creation being in traditional Anangu culture. These works highlight the cultural richness that Thompson possesses as a proud Pitjantjatjara/Yankunytjatjara woman, and her focus on the intergenerational transfer of cultural ties, particularly the passing of knowledge down to her daughters.
The gallery is currently closed to the public and the exhibition can only be viewed online. Please check the gallery for latest updates.
