Claire Primrose, Thredbo River, 2019. Mixed media on polycotton, 66 x 77cm. Courtesy: the artist and Stanley Street Gallery, Sydney.
In Claire Primrose’s most recent exhibition I am Going Outside, we see the artist’s impression of scenic views created through rigorous practice. In her studio, Primrose pieces together the remnants of place – a collection of memories, samples and studies – which are then reworked into the applique of paint.
Through a process of layering, Primrose scratches, sprays and applies a mixture of mediums in a way that not only conjures up the feelings of awe felt only by arriving at a greatly-anticipated view, but does so in a way that allows the colours, layers and gestural mark-making to actively illustrate the scene before you.
Exhibition opens: 2–4pm Saturday 9 November 2019
