Datsun Tran, Heroes on the frontier, 2018. Acrylic and metallic leaf on antique screen, 166.5 x 369cm. Courtesy: the artist and Mars Gallery, Melbourne.
Mars Gallery presents work by Datsun Tran. Life consumes life comprises a series of animal-laden paintings of acrylic and metallic leaf that are self-investigative yet political.
Tran’s new work reflects upon his own experiences of racism and alienation to critically explore issues of immigration, entitlement and ownership within Australia. Animal subjects in the midst of war and chaos comprise these mural-like compositions with suggestions of ancient Chinese calligraphy techniques, an homage to Tran’s cultural heritage.
Exhibition opens: 6–8pm Friday 24 May 2019
