Dean Brown, Labour Hire , 2019, oil on aluminium, 60 x 75cm. Courtesy of the artist and Chalk Horse, Sydney.
Chalk Horse presents Sundays and Holidays, Dean Brown’s first solo show with the gallery. While many artworks record a period of time contextually, the work of Brown speaks of time itself.
Brown’s figures are like the sundial. Onto a vacant expanse they cast a telling shadow; if the shadow is long then the scene takes place at night, if it is short it occurs during the day. Like the sundial, Brown’s paintings realise time in a way that is steady and quiet.
Exhibition opens: 6–8pm Thursday 8 August 2019
