An exhibition of textile-based works by leading Australian and international contemporary artists, drawn from the collections of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and Tamworth Regional Gallery. Exploded Textiles opens during the vibrant Artstate Tamworth program and presents textiles as a potent conceptual medium, one rich with diverse historical, social and political associations from the wider world. This exhibit present works from both collections in compelling ways – none of which is ‘textile art’ in the usual understanding of the term. These artworks may be made of fabric, but it is not an exhibition of textile art. While these may be deemed textile works by default, or rather as the inevitable result of the evolution of their form and content, any notion of them as purely textiles is exploded.
Exhibition opens: 5.15–8pm Friday 1 November 2019
