Chauncey Flay, Black Coralscape IV. Coral (Leptoria sp.), 2020. Mastic, filled polyester comp fill, 27 x 31 x 12cm. Courtesy: the artist and Jhana Millers Gallery, Wellington.
Jhana Millers final exhibition of the year features small sculptures. Surface Effect brings together four artists working in a range of man-made and natural sculptural materials – bone, ceramic, concrete, aluminium, resin, coral and marble. The surface treatment and techniques used by each artist differs; carving, polishing, glazing, cnc routing, casting etc., creating an array of textures, patterns and effects.
Artists included in this exhibition are Sam Kelly, Glenn Barkley, Chauncey Flay and Julian McKinnon.
Chauncey Flay’s Black Coralscape IV pictured here references the ancient building techniques used in Rarotonga (and many other islands surrounded by coral reefs) where they used coral and limestone cement in construction.
Opening event is on at 5:30pm on Thursday 3 December.
The gallery is open and practicing COVID-19 social distancing measures. The exhibition can be viewed online here.
