Helen Maudsley, Our Souls Together and in Communication, Here and Now. For a Moment., 2019. Oil on canvas, 92.5 x 78cm. Courtesy: the artist and Niagara Galleries, Melbourne.
Gender has a way of resisting concrete realization, in language and in life. Helen Maudsley’s exhibition explores the puzzle of gender, in particular the struggle to maintain the self, despite outside pressure. Her paintings reflect this investigation – physically, politically, emotionally, visually and linguistically.
Poetic titles function as an entry point to these multi-faceted works. Maudsley uses visual analogy, graphic imagery and abstraction to describe inner and outer worlds in a distinct and personal palette. She opens up our view of the world with its many juxtapositions. Concepts of power, authority and permission are examined, the artist championing exploration, complexity and ambiguity.
Exhibition opens 6—8pm Tuesday 22 October 2019
