Reframe brings together a selection of furniture, soft sculptures and lights by Ivana Taylor, stemming from a fascination for the functional and aesthetic force of textile wrapping.
Throughout Design Honours and the Associate Program in Furniture at JamFactory Contemporary Craft and Design, my practice has come to study the application of simple textile techniques to rigid functional form. Exploded in large scale or repetition, I focus on a playful observation of how interlacing, weaving, knotting and/or stitching interact with a structure.
Without access to a timber workshop during interstate disruptions, I turned to focus on textiles, using my mother’s costume-making workshop as my base to interlace, weave, knot and stitch. Witnessing mum transform sketches into garments and costumes from every possible period and genre for film, tv, theatre and advertising, trained me to know textiles.
