Johl Dwyer, Emerald Village, 2019. Resin, cedar, enamel, acrylic and pine, 75 x 75 x 5cm. Courtesy: the artist and Tim Melville, Auckland.
Johl Dwyer is interested in the speed at which we experience coloured data through technology, especially via computer and phone screens. His research has also included an exploration of the controversial upgrade from 4G to 5G.
Screens of a Mad Man comprises a suite of small sculptures in resin, wood and steel together with a series of wall-based artworks in cast resin. By making his work in resin Dwyer hopes to explore the full spectrum of colour available from a singular pigment and the effects created by contrasting a glossy, semi-transparent interior with a solid-coloured matte frame.
Screens of a Mad Man is part of the Artweek Auckland 2020 Programme.
