Nursery, as a metaphor, defined a twelve month period that followed the artist’s relocation from Broken Hill, New South Wales to Castlemaine in central Victoria.

In this time set aside by de Gruchy to reassess his work in a new environment, he found balance inside and outside the studio, culminating in a body of work that reflects the transformations, both subtle and bold, informed by a change of surroundings.
