Katherine Throne presents a new suite of works illustrating the surrounding gardens near the artist’s home. In the current climate of upheaval, her large canvases of rambling gardens express an undeniable sense of optimism and freedom. Painted in thick layers of oil paint, the rambling roses and tangles of wildflowers seemingly burst off the canvas and into the viewer’s space.
Katherine has a Master of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Art, University of Auckland. She graduated from Kendall College of Art and Design in Michigan, USA in 2014 with a BFA in Painting (Honours) and a minor in Interior Design.
Her interest in flowers began during her MFA research into the history of design. For Katherine, painting the flower is celebrating and championing all that’s feminine – the beautiful, the emotive and our connection with the earth.
