Kathrin Longhurst: Indoctrinated

May 13, 2021 - May 22, 2021

Kathrin Longhurst, Productive Work, 2021. Oil on linen, 182 x 182cm. Courtesy: the artist and Nanda\Hobbs, Sydney.

It was in the shadow of the Berlin Wall that Kathrin Longhurst spent her childhood. Almost overnight, the Soviet backed regime—the German Democratic Republic (GDR)— constructed it to stem the flow of people to the west. The brutalist structure by design became a symbol of social imprisonment.

It is the detritus of the autocratic symbolism pervading all corners of her upbringing that informs Longhurst as a contemporary painter. Her investigation of the photography from personal history is referenced alongside some of the more iconic documented moments from post-war Germany. Paintings are re-imagined as polaroid images, playing on the imperfect notion of memory—complete with light bursts disrupting the picture plain and imperfect splashes of colour that humanise the workers Utopia.
