Ken Whisson (1927-2022)

April 22 - May 23

“…although he [Ken Whisson] was often known to argue that his paintings came from an intuitive space unmediated by the particularities of his life and character, this was not strictly true. Or, more accurately, the first part the way intuition formed the backbone of his method was true. But the second part that his constant attempt to hold back conscious thought when painting somehow cut his paintings free from his life was not. If anything, it only made this art/life bond stronger.”

Quentin Sprague, 2026.

Niagara Galleries presents an exhibition of never-before exhibited paintings by the late Ken Whisson (1927-2022). Prior to his permanent return to Australia from Perugia, Italy, where the artist had lived for nearly four decades, Whisson curated a number of discrete exhibitions of his work, to be shown in the event of his passing. This, his third posthumous exhibition includes paintings from 1986-1999 featuring his recognisable mix of abstraction and figuration in which people, animals, natural and built environments appear alongside abstract forms and linework.
