Niagara Galleries presents The Studio, an exhibition of new paintings by Kevin Lincoln.
In early 2020, prior to Covid restrictions, art historian, curator and biographer Dr Sheridan Palmer visited Lincoln in his Melbourne studio. In her catalogue essay, Palmer writes, “there is restraint and an intimacy that draws you in and, at first, I am lost for words, but perhaps this is a requisite for visually and emotionally engaging with Lincoln’s world and his art.”
Interpretations of the landscape, self-portraits and domestic artefacts, including postcards and ceramics feature in The Studio, in addition to fragments of previous, abstract work by the artist. Quoting from his past, Lincoln incorporates these earlier paintings as objects within his compositions. Reflecting on this, Palmer notes it is “as if to say that every piece of my past is still present in my life”.
All of these elements, his past work, the objects within his working space, the places he has visited and looked at, and the space that he inhabits are incorporated into the intimate and introspective work of The Studio. The show reveals something, not only about this contemplative artist, but of human experience in general.
The gallery is currently closed to the public and the exhibition can only be viewed online. Please check the gallery for latest updates.
