Currently exhibiting at the NGV’s Rigg Prize, MARS Gallery presents Kohl Tyler’s second solo exhibition, Of Bodies Into Novel Shapes.
Drawing on Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Kohl’s new large-scale ceramics put her own epic spin on themes of change and transformation. These enigmatic sculptures reach new heights for the artist’s practice while still retaining her signature ephemerality.
“So much of what gives meaning to life and art is flux; shifting, evolving, transforming. … This aspect of life is hyperreal in artmaking; Distilled. We take earthly material like clay, and we inflict upon it time, labour, process and our thoughts, until it is wrought anew, and imbued with meaning.” – Kohl Tyler
Kohl Tyler is an Aotearoa/New Zealand-born artist who’s been based in Naarm/Melbourne since 2018.
