Kuwaritja (New/Fresh)

Kuwaritja New/Fresh presents the work of two emerging Iwantja Artists — Wesley Whiskey and Johnny Ulah. The two men work side by side in the Iwantja studio, supporting and encouraging each other. They have developed their respective bodies of work concurrently, with the intention of having their first ever exhibition together. Wesley Whiskey’s work is loud, imaginative, real. Whiskeys work continues the irreverent momentum created by renowned artists like Vincent Namatjira, Tiger Yaltangki and Kayelene Whiskey (Wesley’s cousin). Whiskey’s work is a raucous visual commentary of where traditional Anangu Culture meets nostalgic pop culture. The work is a rough and sure reminder- Anangu Culture is here, strong, resilient and alive in the contemporary world.

Johnny Ulah continues the tradition of Iwantja male artists whose practice is grounded in immense knowledge of Country and Culture. Before recently beginning his painting career, Johnny was dedicated to performing and teaching inma (dance, ceremony). Although new to painting on canvas, Johnny’s work is a continuation of his knowledge and experience of Inma- his work holds the strength and knowing of Country.

While their work is stylistically different, Wesley and Johnny see their practices as a new chapter continuing the lineage of strong and diverse Iwantja men’s work as established by pioneering artists Whiskey Tjukangku (Wesley’s grandfather), Peter Mungkuri, Alec Baker and Jimmy Pompey.

Kuwaritja- New/Fresh brings these two artists together. Both storytellers, their work individually depicts the strength and knowledge of Anangu Culture. Sitting by side the works celebrate, recognise, and proudly share the range, resilience and boundlessness of Anangu Culture through time.
