Do you want the truth, or something beautiful? is Lucina Lane’s second solo exhibition at Sarah Cottier Gallery, and the first solo presentation in Sydney of her ongoing series of ‘log paintings’. The basic form of Lane’s log paintings resemble and amplify a painting’s fundamental architecture: fabric stretched over a timber frame. Lane substitutes conventional materials for unrefined banksia logs, found fabrics with ’readymade’ compositions, and clunky metal brackets. These exaggerations of a painting archetype foreground their materiality and production, addressing the preamble or history of their own existence.
