Matthew Quick, A SILENT SONG OF FADING GLORY, 2019. Oil on Italian linen,120 x 100cm. Courtesy: the artist, and Nanda\Hobbs Gallery, Sydney.
The works in Matthew Quick‘s latest exhibition are not only a unique amalgamation of the tradition of landscape painting and surrealism, but are filled with metaphors and stories that the viewer is invited to explore and extrapolate. Thematically, the pictures look at how previous generations believed the future would be, compared with the realities of the present day. This Used to Be the Future is a unique vision that recontextualizes the past into the artist’s alternative future. Or is it alternative? In many cases, Quick observes that with the best and greatest intentions, things have just worked out differently than we expected.
Exhibition opens 6–8pm Thursday 10 October 2019
