Together with the gallery, Melissa Coote will present Sun, a debut Olsen exhibition of recent paintings and photographs. Naturally, the works take our sun as their point of departure and riff on its tremendous bounty of light, energy and movement. Where the photographic components are imbued with these very elements directly, the paintings have been laboriously crafted to mimic the subject’s often subtle veils and emanations. These pieces employ ground pigment, charcoal, silver gouache and mastic resin to build up their ever-changing surfaces. “The quality of the light in the room will determine how and what we see when we observe the sun paintings in the same way that it affects the tintypes”, Coote explains.
Sun will be current in our Woollahra gallery 09-26 February.
Exhibition Event: Wednesday February 09, 5pm – 7pm.
