Mick Wikilyiri: Mama Untalpa Kunpu – Strong Father and Daughter

October 14, 2020 - November 7, 2020

Mick Wikilyiri, Ngayuku ngura – My Country, 2020. Synthetic polymer paint on linen, 122 x 151cm. Courtesy: the artist, Tjala Arts, SA and Alcaston Gallery, Melbourne.

Mick Wikilyiri’s highly contemporary paintings reveal a unique view of the world; through the use of striking imagery, stylistic experimentation and intense colour, Wikilyiri distinctively portrays his beloved country surrounding Amata in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunyjatjara (APY) Lands of far north South Australia.

A respected senior artist and elder in his community, Wikilyiri’s vibrant landscapes are a true celebration of Anangu culture, which serve an important role in the protection of cultural ties for future generations. This is exemplified by the profound influence and knowledge that Wikilyiri has imparted to his daughter, celebrated artist Yaritji Young.
