
In the Bundjalung language, “Nyaa” translates to “look”. To “look” is to listen with one’s eyes, transforming observation into an active process of learning and understanding. This idea positions “looking” as another way of considering leading to valiant participation that transforms the observer into an active learner. By listening with one’s eyes, individuals can draw on deeper insights and foster a greater understanding of cultural stories from artists living in Bundjalung. Observation is not merely a passive act but a powerful tool for gaining insight.
Eleven emerging artists from the Northern Rivers region of NSW demonstrate their powers of observation to unveil unique narratives, perspectives, and offerings deeply grounded in the rich visual landscape of regional culture. Their art reflects stories shaped by personal experiences, cultural heritage, and Country. Nyaa celebrates the diversity of emerging Northern Rivers artists while inviting viewers to engage with these stories, which are born from observations leading to shared understanding and connections.
