Penny Howard: TE WHAKAHOKI – A sort of homecoming

April 21, 2020 - May 20, 2020

Penny Howard, SOTHEBY’S Lot 14 / Whakahoki, 2020. Acrylic on board, 90 x 120cm. Courtesy: the artist and White Space Gallery, Hampton.

Penny Howard (Ngapuhi) was impelled to create the paintings and drawings in this body of work through a profound sense of anger. Her recent online sales of historic Māori artefacts – taonga tüturu– at the British auction house, Sothebys, motivated her to re-capture them. By extending from their photographic images, she is ensuring they are brought back to us, if not literally, at least figuratively: te hokinga ki tēnei kāinga o Aotearoa New Zealand.

This exhibition can be viewed by appointment, and online on the gallery website. View exhibition here.
