Robin Morrison: The South Island of New Zealand From the Road

June 3 - July 27

Robin Morrison (1944-1993) is one of New Zealand’s most celebrated photographers, known for his unpretentious yet deeply perceptive images of everyday life. This exhibition centres on a pivotal body of work made during the winter of 1979 when Morrison and his family spent six months travelling more than 18,000 miles across the South Island of New Zealand.

Photographing from the road and working in colour, Morrison captured the distinctive ways people inscribed themselves onto the land, through painted facades, improvised structures, and subtle acts of habitation.

Originally published in 1981, The South Island of New Zealand From the Road cemented Morrison’s place in New Zealand’s photographic history — it was the first photographic book to win a New Zealand Book Award.

Now, this exhibition has images selected by Morrison’s sons, Jake and Keir, and {Suite} Director David Alsop. This is the second exhibition co-ordinated by them, and is a continuation of their efforts to bring Robin’s work back into the public view.
