Rosemary Laing’s new photographic series, skyground (2019) was undertaken in Aotearoa/New Zealand’s Southern Alps/Kā Tiritiri o te Moana, during the unseasonal and unprecedented storms of late spring, 2018. Thematically, skyground is most closely aligned with the simulated ether of Laing’s series weather (2006), which conjures the effects of late capitalism as an atmospheric nightmare — a condition of our own making and of which we have lost control.
While skyground recalls weather’s anthropogenic concerns, it also situates the viewer squarely within the storm conditions, recasting their previous role as bystander to one now of central protagonist.”
