Ruth Oliphant, Kiln 1. Fused and carved glass, 67 x 45 x 0.6cm. Courtesy: the artist and Beaver Galleries, Canberra.
Canberra-based glass artist Ruth Oliphant explores the interrelationships between place, perception and visual memory in her striking architectural glass works. From the ground up is Oliphant’s tribute to the historic Yarralumla Brickworks in Canberra.
Established in 1913 and now under redevelopment, the brickworks produced the bricks of many of Canberra’s early buildings. The artist skilfully combines hot and cold glass working techniques including carving, fusing and engraving to skilfully capture the now empty spaces within this unique site. Oliphant is a graduate of ANU School of Art and Design with an ongoing Canberra-based studio practice.
Exhibition opens: 6–8pm Thursday 7 November 2019
