Beyond the Stone Age marks the first exhibition presented collectively by thirteen members of the South Australian Stone Sculptors Association, and for some, their debut in a gallery setting. As diverse and distinctive as the artists themselves, who have carved, cast and printed these works, the exhibition represents a combined 200 years of sculptural practice applied to materials formed over millions of years. The works span stone, bronze and wood sculpture, alongside linocuts.
The South Australian Stone Sculptors Association was founded in 2016 by Adelaide Hills–based sculptor Silvio Apponyi. The collective has evolved through decades of shared practice, united by a passion for stone sculpture. Each artist has developed a unique voice shaped by learning, experimentation and time, with many having benefited from Apponyi’s mentorship.
