Sam Gold: Soft, Until It Burns

Sam Gold’s work begins at the surface—where skin meets clay, where pressure leaves a mark. Through ceramics shaped by touch, heat, and restraint, Gold traces queer ways of knowing: slow, bodily, attentive.

About this exhibition, Sam shares: “The sea sits beneath much of my thinking, it is how the work arrives. Not only as ancestry or memory, but as a process. A body constantly reshaping itself through pressure, erosion, sediment, and movement. Water refuses permanence. It softens edges. Carries fragments. Dissolves boundaries. Returns things altered. I think clay behaves similarly. I know I behave similarly. Absorbing, softening, collapsing, and most of all remembering. Water sustains clay like breath sustains us; the behaviour is distinguishably similar. I watch forms turn ghostly as they pass through stages of in-betweenness, water leaving like an exhale.”
