Savanhdary Vongpoothorn, Broken Sutra (Naga Paths), 2019. Acrylic on perforated canvas, 180 x 300cm. Courtesy: the artist and Niagara Galleries, Melbourne.
Following Savanhdary Vongpoothorn’s recent international recognition and her important 2019 survey exhibition All that arises at Drill Hall Gallery, Canberra, Niagara Galleries presents Broken Sutra, the latest exhibition from one of Australia’s leading artists from the South East Asian region.
Featuring recent paintings and works on paper, Broken Sutra centres on work produced in response to Vongpoothorn’s experience at Nigatsu-dō at Todai-ji Temple in Nara, Japan. The collaborative large-scale paper installation Footsteps to the Nigatsu-dō (Pali Sound, Tanka Sound), 2017-2019 is shown alongside a series of paintings whose surfaces are marked with thousands of repetitive perforations, in the artist’s distinctive style.
Combining her interest in historical art movements including abstraction and minimalism, with elements from a wide variety of cultures: from Laos, Australia, Vietnam, Scotland, India, and now Japan, Vongpoothorn creates work open to multiple readings & endless associations; timeless work that is very relevant to contemporary experience.
Exhibition opens: 6–8pm Tuesday 4 February 2020
