Sebastian Di Mauro, $50 (from GREENBACK series), 2018-2019. US military blankets, cotton thread, 163 x 210cm. Courtesy: the artist and MARS Gallery, Melbourne.
MARS Gallery presents an exhibition of work by Sebastian Di Mauro featuring six unique quilts from the Greenback series. Born in Far North Queensland, Di Mauro grew up in Brisbane, Australia and recently immigrated to the USA. The artist reflects on his experiences of being an immigrant in a foreign country and the feeling of dislocation and unfamiliarity.
Using US Government military blankets, Di Mauro embroiders iconic images found on the reverse side of current US notes in circulation. Significant American buildings are meticulously hand-stitched on the fabric, including the Lincoln Memorial and The White House.
Exhibition opens: 6–8pm Thursday 7 November 2019
