Shane Salvador’s Blokes presents a visceral study of contemporary masculinity, shaped by labour, violence, exhaustion, tenderness and the unspoken emotional weight carried by everyday men. Drawing on his upbringing in regional New South Wales and his experience across film, photography and painting, Salvador stages each work with a distinctly cinematic sense of tension, often capturing figures in the moments immediately before or after impact.
His dark, high-contrast compositions rework the drama of Baroque painting through a contemporary Australian lens. Saints, martyrs and biblical heroes are replaced by labourers, brawlers, tattooists, tradesmen and late-night figures drawn from working-class and subcultural environments. Across the exhibition, bravado sits beside vulnerability, humour beside melancholy, and physical strength beside fatigue. Rather than idealising his subjects, Salvador allows distortion, visible brushwork and psychological unease to remain, elevating familiar scenes into images of dignity, contradiction and emotional complexity.
