Alexandra Sasse Gallery presents work by Hendrik Kolenberg.
Kolenberg’s urban forms and colours reflect a love of city dwelling, at a moment when Melbournians are reconnecting after pandemic lockdowns. Kolenberg was Senior Curator of Australian Prints, Drawings and Watercolours at the Art Gallery of NSW from 1989 to 2012. This is his first solo exhibition in Melbourne.
His work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; State Library of NSW, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Hobart; Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, Orange Regional Gallery and the University of Technology, Sydney.
“Kolenberg is drawn to ugliness, grime and industrial areas. So his paintings naturally don’t depict sentimental or pretty subjects, rather they convey his fascination with the overlooked, discarded or functional aspects of the city. For him each is transformed by the intensity and fall of light.” – Bradley Hammond, Orange Regional Gallery.
Private viewing on 8 April, 2021. Contact gallery@alexandrasasse.com for your invitation. RSVP essential as the number of guests is limited.
Gallery opening hours are Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday 11-4pm or by appointment.
