Tcheu Siong, Yawm Saub Chao (Chao and the Three Spirits), 2009. Embroidery and applique on cotton, 215 x 285cm. Courtesy: the artist and Niagara Galleries, Melbourne.
Dreaming, Tcheu Siong’s first solo exhibition in Australia, features unique hand-stitched, applique textile works, completed during the last ten years. The exhibition follows the 9th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art at QAGOMA, in which Tcheu Siong’s work was a highlight.
Sponsored by ELEVATIONS LAOS, a non-profit contemporary art initiative funded by the Spellbrook Foundation in partnership with the Global Development Group, Siong came to international attention with her highly original work, incorporating Lao Hmong techniques, with a marked departure from traditional designs. Employing elaborate patterning and vivid colours, Siong expresses figures from her dreams, which are identified and named with her Shaman husband, Phasao Lao within the Hmong spiritual world.
Exhibition opens: 6–8pm Tuesday 4 February 2020
