Gallery 9 presents work by Teelah George. In this latest series of works, George looks closely at the embroidery ‘sampler’ as she explores its domestic and skill development connotations including ideas of repetition and labour. She is particularly fascinated with the repetition of motifs throughout the ages – how these have changed over time and with many hands.
The title of the show makes reference and use of a particular motif that is known by many different names (‘the boxer, lover with flower, naked motif) depending on how it is embroidered through the ages. This changing of form is sometimes due to replication of ‘error’. In The Boxer Is The Lover With The Flower Is The Naked Motif, George looks at how process can be informed and elaborated on through perceived ‘mistakes’ or intuition.
Many of the paintings are constructed from elements of other works, and stitched together. These fragments, remembered colours and patterns from a journey to a final composition and are responsive.
