Teelah George, Sky Piece (Perth, Belfast, Paris), 2018–19. Thread and bronze on linen, 160 x 160cm. Courtesy: the artist and Neon Parc, Melbourne.
Teelah George‘s new suite of richly hued abstract and monochromatic textiles are containers of time, repetition, and weight and place. Laboriously embroidered over a period of 18 months across Perth, Belfast and Paris their surfaces flicker with subdued yet shimmering colours, and their folds imbue a historic communion.
Highlights include the azure Sky Piece (Perth, Paris, Belfast). Part of the artist’s Sky Piece series, first shown at Primavera at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, is an attempt to embroider the sky – an elegant Sisyphean goal. In The Weight black, white and deep green stripes fold into each other subverting stability of foreground and background in optical play.
Exhibition opens: 6–8pm Friday 12 July 2019
