Teo Treloar, The Black Captain, This is Impermanence #1, 2019. Graphite on Fabriano Artistico 640 gsm hot pressed paper, 56 × 76cm. Courtesy the artist and Andrew Baker Art Dealer, Brisbane.
The Black Captain is a series of 15 exquisitely rendered figurative drawings by Wollongong-based artist Teo Treloar which are bolstered by a small number of abstract “field drawings”. Commenced a couple of years ago, at a time when the artist was suffering from acute depression, the works feature a peculiar protagonist obsessively performing a series of improbable experiments. This every day journeyman with slicked-back hair, seemingly from sometime in mid 20th-century but also timeless, is neatly attired in workaday white shirt and tie.
Exhibition opens: 6–8pm Friday 23 August 2019
