Tim Allen, Lucid, 2019/20. Oil on linen, 122 x 122cm. Courtesy: the artist and Gallerysmith, Melbourne.
In many ways, landscape resides within the mind. Bodily sensations such as the sounds of bird call, the aromas of foliage and the feeling of the earth underfoot merge to create experience and memory.
The paintings in Tim Allen’s latest exhibition are inspired by wilderness landscapes; places that are only accessible by foot, where any person ‘is a visitor who does not remain’. They are the culmination of an Australian Wildlife Conservancy residency undertaken by Allen in 2019. According to the artist, “they represent the poetic space between setting off and arriving; leaving the everyday and walking into the landscape, alone”.
Exhibition opens: 2-4pm Saturday 1 February 2020
