Image: Tomislav Nikolic, 1: lies come hard in disguise, 2018-2019. Acrylic polymer, marble dust, 23ct red gold leaf, bronze, on wood and steel, 70 x 66 x 5cm. Courtesy: the artist and Fox Jensen McCrory Gallery, Auckland.
Tomislav Nikolic’s new group of works pay the prophets to justify your reason includes seven new works – steel framed, wooden panels that celebrate colour and its emotive power. Like medieval icons, the panels themselves are gently convex and will in time develop fissures, demonstrating the endurance of stubborn organic life.
A second suite in seven parts uses Nikolic’s extravagant frames, which are fully co-opted into the structure, composition and rainbow of colour. The works are a testament to the fact that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. This will be Nikolic’s ninth solo show with sister galleries Fox Jensen in Sydney and Fox Jensen McCrory Gallery in Auckland.
Exhibition opens: 5:30–7.30pm Thursday 15 August 2019
