Yaritji Young: Mama Untalpa Kunpu – Strong Father and Daughter

October 14, 2020 - November 7, 2020

Yaritji Young, Tjala Tjukurpa – Honey Ant Story, 2020. Synthetic polymer paint on linen, 197 x 198cm. Courtesy: The Artist, Tjala Arts, SA and Alcaston Gallery, Melbourne.

Yaritji Young’s vivid, contemporary paintings joyously beam with bright, luminescent colour, reflecting the spectacular desert landscape surrounding her home country surrounding Amata in the APY Lands of South Australia. A highly respected senior artist and community leader, Young offers a unique representation of land, spirituality and a rich family history through her art, portraying the country of her father, renowned artist Mick Wikilyiri.

With her dynamic use of colour, energetic brushstrokes and distinctive mark making, Young’s country and culture come alive in her paintings, particularly her unique interpretation of Tjala or the Honey Ant Dreaming. Young’s vibrant, contemporary work strives to connect her traditional Anangu culture for younger and future generations.
