OUTBACK REGIONAL GALLERY
The Outback Regional Gallery is one of three exhibition spaces inside the Waltzing Matilda Centre. The facility first opened in 1998 to celebrate Australia’s unofficial anthem, first written and publicly performed in the town of Winton. The centre’s unique architectural design draws on elements of the Winton landscape, and is one of the only 24-hour, climate-controlled, purpose-built galleries in Central Queensland able to display artworks from regional, state and national institutions. The gallery’s initiative is to collect contemporary works that align with strategic themes significant to Winton, and highlight the outback region.
The main exhibition space celebrates all associations with Australia’s iconic ballad Waltzing Matilda and provides a unique insight into history and place. The Waltzing Matilda Centre’s focus is to preserve historical and cultural material for research and the enjoyment of the public. The Outback Regional Gallery aims to develop, encourage and enhance arts and culture in the outback region.
AWARDS
The Outback Regional Gallery alternates a diverse annual program of touring, solo and group exhibitions including its annual visual arts prize – The John Villiers Outback Art Prize. Generously sponsored by The John Villiers Trust, the prize now worth $16,000 attracts talent locally and across the nation celebrating the cultural richness and inspiration from the inner regions of Australia. Now in its 21st year the prize encourages younger creatives to enter the emerging youth category and annual professional arts development program to continue the legacy of the late John ‘Jack’ Villier’s vision to increase opportunity for young people living remote.
