Louis Grant joins Sabbia Gallery

Louis Grant is a Ngunnawal Country/Canberra artist working in glass — refined material sensibility, an evolving exploration of sculptural form, and a deep engagement with both process and concept. Grant was recently featured as part of Art Collector’s annual Undiscovered Issue 116 (April-June).

“My practice focuses on glass as a main material to speak of a queer identity, notions of fluidity, instability, care and fragility,” Grant says.

Trained in glass and working out of Canberra Glassworks, he shifts positions within a discipline whose spaces of production have traditionally been masculinised — queering the medium, deviating from what is understood as “proper” form and finish, and taking the “mastery” of traditional craft beyond a skill set into a subject position that speaks to gender and power. Glass is a fluid medium, constantly in a state of becoming. Grant uses it to describe social and psychological spaces that are themselves unstable compounds, fashioning hyper-fragile entities that are fragile less for being made of glass than for the emotional tumult they’re arranged in and by.

A major showcase of Grant’s work is coming in the months ahead, with a solo exhibition scheduled for 2027.
