Sullivan+Strumpf now representing Jess Cochrane

Sullivan+Strumpf adds London-based painter who transforms digital imagery into oil paintings that blend historical techniques with contemporary subject matter.

Sullivan+Strumpf has announced representation of London-based artist Jess Cochrane, whose practice centers on translating digital imagery back into the physical realm through oil painting.

Cochrane’s work captures everyday, fleeting moments by transforming photographic references into painted compositions. Her practice draws from digital images of ephemeral moments and popular aesthetic trends, which she reinterprets through the traditional medium of oil paint.

The artist’s approach seamlessly merges 19th and 20th century painting techniques with contemporary subject matter, creating works that pay homage to the colours and compositional strategies of Post-Impressionist masters while addressing current visual culture.

By pausing these transient digital moments with her paintbrush, Cochrane creates a dialogue between the immediacy of contemporary image-making and the enduring qualities of traditional painting practices. Her work reflects on how we document and consume visual information in the digital age, while simultaneously asserting the continued relevance of painting as a medium for processing contemporary experience.

Photography serves as both source material and conceptual framework for Cochrane’s practice, as she mines the endless stream of digital imagery that characterizes modern visual culture and transforms it through the deliberate, time-intensive process of oil painting.

The representation marks Sullivan+Strumpf’s continued commitment to supporting artists who engage critically with contemporary image culture through traditional media.
