Catherine Clayton-Smith joins Olsen Gallery.

The two-time Sulman Prize finalist brings her emotive, ethereal works to the Sydney gallery.

Words: Emily Riches

Born in Aotearoa/New Zealand, the accomplished Sydney-based painter Catherine Clayton-Smith has recently joined Olsen Gallery. Primarily working in acrylics on canvas, her delicate and deeply personal and psychological paintings offer an expanded engagement with landscape. With finely layered colour and sensuous gestures, her distinct approach to abstraction explores both memory and embodiment.

The titles of her most recent solo shows – Palace Paroxetine, Brimming and After the Orgy – speak to her engagement with psychological, physical and emotional states which she explores with sensitivity and a characteristic subtle wit.

Clayton-Smith graduated from the National Art School (BFA Painting) in 2014, and has gone from strength to strength in her career. Her incredible exhibition history includes nine solo exhibitions and numerous group appearances across esteemed galleries such as the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Te Uru Waitākere Gallery and Goulburn Regional Gallery.

A decorated artist, she is a recipient of the National Art School’s Parker’s Painting Award, Blank Canvas Award for Painting, the John Olsen Price for Drawing and was a finalist in the Sulman Prize in both 2018 and 2023.

Her work is held in numerous public collections such as Artbank, The Wallace Trust and The National Art School, as well as private collections in Australia, Aotearoa/New Zealand and the UK.

Olsen Gallery is looking forward to showcasing her “luminous, questioning and uniquely poetic vision” in their gallery.
