Reality is Fabulous draws on Alex Seton’s interest in the puffer jacket as a currently ubiquitous fashion item that is wryly suggestive of the very human desire to protect and insulate ourselves from an exterior world, both natural and constructed. This extends Seton’s ongoing questions of how does the individual participate in their society, and in particular their digital connectedness and the search for a truly private, sequestered space — now a rare and privileged luxury.

In a nod to the polychrome marble sculptures of antiquity, Seton augments the marble with cosmetic powders, exaggerating the tension between the synthetic nature of the garment and the natural material of marble. In these carvings, the very fabric of reality is both concrete and illusory at once and of the same moment.
