King Street Gallery on William presents an exhibition of works by Andrew Christofides.
“During my days in London in the mid-1970’s, a number of artists were using the term ‘non-hierarchic’ to indicate that no part of a painting was more important than any other. This was an attempt to escape the Renaissance idea of a composition being critical to understanding of painting. Traditionally, it provided a guide to the viewer to what was important. Their aim was to rid the work of any specific meaning that hierarchy might bring, allowing it to be experienced in its own right. Within my own practice, the more ‘concrete’ works are generated by numeric sequences and have no intended hierarchy, but when my work contains a subject, then composition is determined by the needs of that subject and my own chosen visual language. As my experiences, imaginings and subjects have changed, so too has the composition / hierarchy changed, or ‘evolved’, hence the title Evolving Hierarchies.” – Andrew Christofides, 2024.
Opening Event: Wednesday 3 April, 6 – 8 pm.
