Aubrey Tjangala was born in 1974 at Yayi Yayi, a temporary settlement established by the Pintupi people. It was a time when his father, Ronnie Tjampitjinpa, was focused on returning to his traditional lands, a goal he achieved with the establishment of the Walungurru (Kintore) settlement in 1981. Tjampitjinpa moved there with his young family in 1983, establishing an outstation at Ininti. During this period, Tjampitjinpa emerged as one of Papunya Tula Artists’ major painters, pioneering the rhythmic, linear style synonymous with the Walungurru painters of the 1990s and evident in Aubrey’s recent work.
Now settled in Kintore and following in his fathers footsteps, Tjangala is a traditional owner for the Country surrounding Kintore. He paints in the tradition of his father, incorporating the Dreaming stories of the area including Minma Kutjarra Tjukurrpa (Two Travelling Women), Ngintaka Tjukurrpa (Perentie) and the Waru Tjukurrpa (Fire) at Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay).
